Where the island is still warm.

Between 1730 and 1736, six years of eruptions changed southern Lanzarote for ever. Today that landscape of craters, lava flows and impossible colours is Timanfaya National Park, protected since 1974 and the island’s only national park. I am an official guide of the Park, and it is the visit I most love to explain.

How the visit works

The Route of the Volcanoes cannot be driven in a private car: independent visitors park at Islote de Hilario and continue on the Park’s own coach. On my tours we travel by minibus, so there is no need to change vehicle, and I join you as an official guide of the National Park.

Islote de Hilario

Just below your feet the ground is still hundreds of degrees hot. This is where the geothermal demonstrations happen — water shooting up like a geyser, straw catching fire on its own — and where you’ll find El Diablo restaurant, designed by César Manrique, cooking with the volcano’s heat.

Camels, if you like

At the Echadero de los Camellos you can take a short ride among the cones. It is optional and paid separately; the Park sets the price and I confirm it when you book. If you fancy it, we fit it into the route.

In summer, start early

The south is the warmest part of the island, with little shade. In the hotter months it is best to start early and bring water, a hat and sun protection. Early and late light also brings out the best colours in the lava.

  • Closed, comfortable shoes
  • Water, a hat and sunscreen
  • A light layer: it is almost always windy
  • Stay on the paths: leaving them or taking stones is not allowed

What people ask me mostabout Timanfaya

Can you walk in Timanfaya?

Walking inside the National Park is very restricted and only allowed on authorised routes. If you’d like to hike among volcanoes, I organise walks in the Los Volcanes Natural Park, right next to the National Park.

How much time do I need?

On my routes, Timanfaya is part of a 4, 6 or 7-hour tour together with other stops in the south or the north. I’ll suggest the combination that best fits your day.

Is the entrance fee included?

No. Entrance fees for the tourist centres and the National Park are not included. I’ll list them in your proposal.
