A vineyard born from ash.

The 18th-century eruptions buried whole fields under a layer of volcanic ash — rofe, as we call it in Lanzarote. The farmers didn’t give up. They dug down to the fertile soil, planted one vine in each pit and created one of the most remarkable farming landscapes in the world. I love wine, and this is where you understand why.

Pits, walls and dew

Each vine grows at the bottom of a hand-dug crater, sheltered by a zoco — a small half-moon stone wall that protects it from the trade winds. The ash works like a sponge: it holds the night’s moisture and keeps the soil from drying out.

Volcanic Malvasía

It is the island’s best-known grape, giving aromatic, fresh white wines with a saline touch. Other traditional varieties grow alongside it, and the local wineries offer different styles, from dry to sweet.

Tastings on my routes

The 4-hour South route includes a published wine tasting. The 6-hour South Premium includes a tasting of two wines and a walk among the vines. The tasting takes place at one of the wineries I work with, such as Rubicón, El Grifo or Stratvs, depending on the day and timing.

  • South · 4 h: tasting in La Geria
  • South Premium · 6 h: two-wine tasting
  • Full day · 7 h: La Geria on the way north

No need to drive

We travel with a professional driver, so you can taste the wine with peace of mind. Close by is the Monumento al Campesino, at the island’s geographical centre — César Manrique’s tribute to the people who made this land liveable.
